Jim Shackelford has been painting full time for over twenty years. After a life in the business world in Atlanta, he finally gave in to his artistic talent and the desire to spend full time on painting and creating.
His works in realism and impressionism employ bold, colorful strokes, often with impasto surfaces derived from painting with palette knives. Color is the keynote of his work, and he seeks to capture the scene behind the scene, or the emotion of the image. His work is not timid, but rather evokes a response from the viewer. He is comfortable painting with a brush or knife, on canvas. His paintings range in size from 16" X 20" to 62" X 75."
Jim comments that many of his works recreate an image in the familiar, traditional style of realism, while others create an impression of that image or scene. Recently, Jim has focused on contemporary and abstract, non-representational styles. The more straightforward paintings may not distract nor disturb the viewer. Contemporary and abstract paintings can be more challenging to the mind, and may cause one to reflect on innermost emotions and thoughts.
Shackelford is primarily a self-taught artist; however, he has attended several visual arts seminars and workshops. He has won many awards, including several First Place and Best in Show, in various juried exhibitions over the Southeast. His work has been exhibited in New York, Bonn (Germany), Saudi Arabia, and over the Southeastern United States. His paintings are in the collections of individuals in the Middle East, Europe, and all over the United States.
Some of Jim Shackelford's paintings may be seen at Twigs and Leaves Gallery in Waynesville, North Carolina, Bravo Collection of Fine Art in Tryon, North Carolina, The Design Gallery in Burnsville, North Carolina, and at 32 Broad Gallery in Brevard, North Carolina.
