Tryon luthier Jay Lichty builds custom one-of-a-kind acoustic guitars and ukuleles. By working with the highest quality exotic and domestic tonewoods and materials he crafts instruments that are stunning acoustically, visually and esthetically. There is no “standard Lichty” and the majority are designed and built to order.
Jay built his first guitar in 2009 under the watchful eye of master luthier Wayne Henderson. Since that time he has built over 140 instruments that have shipped from coast to coast and internationally to over 10 countries. A few of the professional musicians who play custom Lichty instruments are Tom and Mike Gossin of top county band Gloriana, Geoff Achison (world-class guitarist from Australia), Shohei Toyoda (guitar teacher and performer and winner of Japan’s National Finger-Picking Guitar Championship), Randall Bramblett (southern singer-songwriter), Kimo Hussey (Hawaiian ukulele master) and Noah Guthrie (southern singer-songwriter).
In addition to building instruments Jay conducts one-on-one and small group workshops throughout the year for both guitar and ukulele building.
Jay continues to deepen his skills and expertise through ongoing study. He has taken an advanced guitar-building workshop with luthier Charles Fox and has studied under internationally renowned master luthier Ervin Somogyi (author of several classic luthier books including The Responsive Guitar). In addition, Jay has visited the shops of luthiers from around the world; in Asheville and Hawaii, and in France to Peru. In July 2014 Jay has been invited to be a presenter for the Guild of American Luthiers convention in Tacoma Washington.
