Artist’s Statement 2018

My works in this exhibition are unresolved narratives that often suggest an individual search. I think of them as fictions constructed from selected truths in that the figures are invented and the settings created from various natural elements I have encountered on recent hikes in the Southern Appalachians or my backyard. Nature is always a significant element in my work and exists as both fact and metaphor. Although I enjoy illusion I avoid the purely photographic reality and instead pursue the reality we react to, that we think about, or remember. That is the one that becomes story.
