Guion, Jaramillo, Jones and Smith redefine geometric abstraction in Upstairs Artspace spring show

Upstairs Artspace is pleased to announce three spring shows featuring dynamic works by four regional artists: Glenda Guion, Luis Jaramillo, Dana Jones, and Ralston Fox Smith. The joint exhibition will feature an array of paintings, works on paper, and ceramic sculptures - all demonstrating a unique view of nature and relationships.

The show runs from March 16 through April 25, 2025, with an Opening Reception and Artist Walk & Talk on Sunday, March 16 at 2 pm. The public is invited to this free event.

Born and raised in Nashville, Tenn., Guion works with clay as material and metaphor. Her sculptural works in this show titled, “From Earth to Archteype,” delve into the connection between humanity and the natural world. Her latest series evokes timeless archetypes, bridging ancient traditions with contemporary expression.

Jaramillo, from Greenville, S.C., explores personal and collective memory through colorful paintings and works on paper in his show “Mapping My Universe.” His layered compositions reflect a process of mapping emotions, experiences, and exploration, offering a poetic interpretation of place and self.

Jones, based in Greenville, S.C. and Smith, based Asheville, N.C., engage in a visual dialogue through parallel explorations of geometric abstraction in their show “Parallel Line.” Their paintings share common themes - nature, weather, and patterns - but their different styles create a back-and-forth visual conversation about how we see and present art.

The Upstairs Artspace invites the public to experience these varied expressions of color and abstract art throughout the duration of the exhibition and engage with the artists at the opening reception. The gallery, located at 49 S. Trade St., Tryon, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 12-5 pm. For more information visit UpstairsArtspace.org or call 828-859-2828.
